The other day I asked my friend if he had any archive files of a previous project I managed. I was planning to add it to my portfolio but it was taken offline a while ago.
Good news: He said he might have CDs he could look through.
Bad news: Noone has a CD Drive in the office!
Doh!
Come to think of it, I don’t recall having to open anything from a CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM if that matters to you) in the past 8 years or so. Have you?
I rely strongly on USB drives or portable hard disks for transfers or storage nowadays, especially since they got so affordable. And cloud folders, of course.
I don’t even remember if my last 2-3 laptops even had an optical drive.
Imagine though, we were so reliant on using those shiny discs to transfer huge-ass files not too long ago. I remember the waiting time to read the files, double-checking them afterwards if they were saved correctly and not corrupted…good times. Rewritable CDs though. 🤯
(Yes, I’m old. I know. I’m dealing with it.)
How quickly our habits evolve.
I guess there have been a lot of dead tech in the last decade that we’ve taken for granted, or that’s went under the radar, due to the quick and seamless replacements that have evolved.
Maybe I’ll compile a list of other notable mentions in the tech graveyard next time.
